Canada’s retaliatory tariffs on a range of U.S. goods took effect at 12:01 a.m. Eastern Time on September 8, according to official announcements from the Government of Canada and reporting by multiple outlets including Reuters and Al Jazeera.

The measures apply to products covering approximately $27.6 billion in annual U.S. imports. Rates are set at 15 percent, 25 percent, or 50 percent and are designed to match corresponding U.S. tariff rates on Canadian goods. Targeted categories include steel and aluminum products, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, electronics, furniture, and clothing.

Canadian officials stated the response follows U.S. tariffs of 50 percent on roughly the same value of Canadian goods that took effect in late August after trade negotiations broke down. The Canadian government also announced a multi-billion-dollar support package for affected workers and businesses.

Goods already in transit to Canada on the day the tariffs entered force are exempt. The Canadian government said the countermeasures will remain in place until the United States removes its corresponding tariffs.
